The Proposal
How does British zombie film ‘Shaun of the Dead’ follow the codes and conventions of the zombie genre?
My independent study is a focus on the zombie genre. My main text is a hybrid of zombie and comedy, (rom zom com). The study will focus the conventions of the zombie genre, also how Shaun of the Dead subverts the classic zombie conventions.

Media Language: The shaky hand-held camerawork and natural lighting reinforced the low budget. Location and iconography subverts usual zombie films.

Institution: British film often made with a low-budget and a small institution. However, Shaun of the Dead was produced by Universal.

Genre: Romantic, zombie, comedy (rom zom com). How does Shaun of the Dead follow the conventions of this hybrid genre or the classic zombie genre?

Representation: The representation of a heroic protagonist, is Shaun really heroic?

Audience: Mainly male dominated audience as the protagonist is male. Does the film allow the male gaze? This challenges Laura Mulvey’s theory and conventional zombie films.

Ideology/Values: Patriarchy, as it is up to the male protagonist to save his family and friends against the zombies.

Narrative: There is a hybrid of romance and comedy that drives the narrative, as well as the zombie content.

Social Context: Mocks the binge drinking society as most of the film is based in a local pub.
Historical:
Economical: low budget film, like most British films
Political: George Romero bases his films around political issues during the time they are being produced.

Other texts: ‘Night of the Living Dead’ George A. Romero (1968)
‘Dawn of the Dead’ Romero (1978)/Zack Snyder (2004)
‘Land of the Dead’ Romero (2005)
‘28 Days Later’ Danny Boyle (2002)

Theory/Theorist: Todorov, often zombie are left open for sequels, Shaun of the Dead challenges this and conform to the Todorovian structure.
Laura Mulvey’s male gaze is challenged; the damsel in distress character is missing from the narrative.
Propp’s 8 character types can be seen in the characters, but also mocks it, driving the comedy aspects of the film.
